Introduction.
More than a decade ago, content creation was a hobby, and not many were doing it. Today, creating digital content has developed into a career, and a lot more people are still doing it for fun, but with huge monetary rewards attached to it.
Content creators are making millions of dollars every year, but the question is how do they make money? The point is how content creators make money in this rapidly evolving and competitive environment.
As content creation continues to evolve, it appears in various forms such as Text, Images, Audio, and Videos, and in most cases, it appears in all of the above-mentioned formats.
Nowadays, it’s either, you are called a blogger, or a Vlogger. This article will be a breakdown of which of the two formats of content creation is best to start with as a content creator.
What is Blogging?
Blogging is the process that implies creating articles, photos, and other forms of content and publishing them on a website which is called a Blog.
A blog is a type of website where the content is presented in reverse chronological order (newer content appears first). Blog content is often referred to as entries or “blog posts”.
Blogs are typically run by an individual or a small group of people called Bloggers, bloggers must manage the blog by updating and adding information regularly.
Pros of Blogging.
Due to the growing number of such web pages, several tools started to appear, which made it easier for users to create online journals and personal blogs.
These tools helped popularize blogging and made the technology accessible to non-technical users. Here are some common Pros attached to being a blogger.
1. Blogging Helps You Get a Better Job.
Nine in ten companies mine online profiles before making a new hire. Employers want to hire people who have a strong online influence and blogging is one way to achieve that.
2. Blogging helps you in starting a business.
Do you want to start a business, but dont know how to, starting a blog can help you attract prospective customers.
When people want to shop or buy something, the first thing they do is go online and read reviews on what they intend to do, this is where blogging comes in handy.
Blogging about products and services your business offers is a way to attract customers to your business.
3. You become a better writer.
When you own your blog, you get to write regularly which helps you sharpen your writing skills. The internet is brimming with information.
What brings a reader to your page is your way of delivering that information. Blogging helps you in developing a unique style and will also make you better qualified for specific content marketing projects.
4. Build Trust online.
Starting a blog enables you to build trust with your audience online, once you give you value via your blog content your audience builds trust with you making you a trusted voice in the industry.
5. Earn Passively.
Blogging brings passive income this is why I recommend anyone seeking to make money easily, all you make is reoccurring income which happens when you sleep. Just put in the work once and wait for the rewards to come in.
6. Starting a blog is easy.
All that is needed to start a blog is a web host and a domain name. You can choose a template from websites like Blogger, or WordPress, finally, Adding posts is almost as easy as sending an e-mail.
Cons of Blogging.
The advantages of blogging are unlimited, you can make money from anywhere while being your boss.
You should also know that blogging is not all bed of roses, as it takes time for success to begin to materialize. Here are some cons attached to blogging.
1. You need to update your blog regularly.
Blogging is not about adding all sorts of posts, you also have to pay the price of updating them regularly cos if you dont, it will stop ranking and get subsided by another blog with updated information. So keep in mind that the more posts you add, the more you have to update.
2. You May Invest Time, and Get Nothing In Return.
90% of bloggers fail, not because blogging is not viable, but because most people go in without prior knowledge of what blogging is.
Starting a website alone takes a few minutes and is straightforward, but moving beyond your blog simply existing and onto having a website that’s understandable, and profitable is something that requires a whole lot of time to achieve.
Learning proper keyword research (AKA how to find the terms that people are searching for. Figuring out search engine optimization (so that your blog shows up on Google and Pinterest when people search those keywords)
3. Blogging Is Still a Job.
To be honest, I don’t even see this as a true disadvantage of blogging because of course it’s a lot of work.
Blogging can bring passive income but not in the early years of starting, you have to put in lots of work such as keyword research, picking a deadline, writing, editing, making graphics, giving it a final review and finally publishing it.
I wrote a comprehensive guide on how to start a blog and build passive income with it, check out the article below to get started.
What is Vlogging?
Vlog stands for a video blog or video log and refers to a type of blog where most or all of the content is in a video format.
Vlog posts consist of creating a video of yourself where you talk on a particular subject such as reporting or reviewing a product or an event.
It can even serve as a way to share your artistic process or provide a tutorial guide on a creative practice or topic.
Vlogging is usually associated with YouTube because it is one of the most utilized platforms when it comes to Vlogging.
You can start a Vlog on Facebook, Instagram, Vimeo, Twitch or even Twitter, it all depends on the kind of audience you have and how you intend to monetize your content.
Pros of Vlogging.
YouTube is the king of user-generated video content, and it’s a fantastic platform to use. But it’s not the only place to establish yourself among video bloggers.
As video becomes a more established and popular medium for the content of all kinds, the options continue to grow. Here are some of the Pros of vlogging.
1. You Become Famous.
The image-centric nature of blogging makes it easy for vloggers to show themselves once in a while making it one of the easiest ways to become famous.
Some of the most famous vloggers have accumulated hundreds of thousands of followers, and their videos are watched by millions.
Not only have they become celebrities, but these vloggers have also made big bucks through advertising on their videos.
If you seek an entertainment career, then vlogging can be one route that makes things a lot easier for you.
2. Reach a Wider Audience
YouTube has an incredible potential reach of over 2 billion — that’s 32% of the total population and 51% of the total internet users out there.
Using YouTube as a platform for your vlogs enables you to reach a wider audience.
Are you seeking to become famous in the Twinkle of an eye, then YouTube can help you get there faster.
3. Engage Directly With Your Audience.
Vlogging allows you to show your face to your audience which is more likely to spark engagement with an audience.
By connecting in this way with your community, your target audience is more likely to remember you, use your service, or buy from your site.
4. Drive Traffic to Your Website.
Another benefit of vlogging is that you get a chance to drive huge traffic to your website. While uploading a video on YouTube, you are allowed to write a short description of your video which can be utilized in sharing links to whatever platform you desire.
Many bloggers and businesses use Vlogging to drive traffic to their websites. Many people will now watch a video but pass up on a written article. So websites often use vlogging to attract new visitors, as well as help them retain current ones.
5. Vlogging allows you to Sell products and services,
Vlogs can be used as part of your marketing strategy. Whatever your online site is selling, use vlogging to promote it.
If you have an eCommerce store, display your products and tell those watching why they should make a purchase.
Or want people to visit your blog? Then sell the content to them through vlogs. This is one strategy used in blogging that can help you make money.
Cons of Vlogging.
Vlogs are more interactive than blogs. It’s easier to engage your audience and keep them on your website when you use videos.
Some people prefer to watch videos compared to reading posts, and in this case, vlogs work perfectly. Vloggers don’t need to be writers.
No expert writing skills are required to set up and keep a vlog, though vlogging comes with its nice perks, it comes with some cons too.
1. Capital intensive.
The equipment required to start a vlog is costly. To ensure that the movie comes out right, a vlogger needs high-definition cameras, proper lighting, and editing software.
The cost of the equipment alone may stop you from starting a vlog, even if you have a good smartphone, it does not compare to someone who is well-equipped to do the same job.
2. Vlogs take much time to produce.
After shooting your video clips for your vlog you still need lots of post-production skillset which is rooted in video editing.
Vlogs can take a long time to produce. Before submitting a video to your vlog, it takes time to film and edit a video for a vlog as you require to understand various video editing software to start with.
3. You may be shy.
Another con that comes with vlogging is that not everyone has the personality to start a vlog because it involves you showing yourself to the world, which not everyone wants to do. If you dont have the nerve to start a vlog, I recommend you dont.
4. Income is not Passive.
One thing about running a Vlog is that the income is not passive as you think. You need to create more videos to stay active as a vlogger.
Take, for example, you cover a topic on YouTube on “Marketing” Trends in marketing change and you should change with it too.
Maybe you shot a video about Facebook marketing three years ago, a lot would have changed and you need to update that video by producing a new version of that video.
One of the biggest things new vloggers or YouTubers struggle with is getting enough content up to build an audience. It’s pretty easy to quit after a few weeks if you don’t see the results you want.
5. You will be Criticized.
Vlogging exposes you to all kinds of audiences, some of which do not agree with your ideology, this does not mean that they hate you, but might just disagree with you on certain topics.
Other people are mean and they don’t like to accept things that are different and seem odd to them. You will likely be criticized by family, friends and even strangers.
While it will happen in the comments section, it will also happen to your face and behind your back.
I wrote a comprehensive guide on how to start a YouTube channel and be successful it, check out the link below to get started.
Conclusion.
So just to point it out straight, both Vlogging and Blogging are good ways to make money online, irrespective of what kind of person you are.
However, you should bear in mind that blogs are used to write content and text. Whereas, in the vlog, the content is in the form of videos.
Blogging is an older concept launched in the year 1990, and people started blogging in 2003. while vlogging began in 2000 and then in 2004.
You should also know that blogs can be built on preety much any platform such as Drupal, Joomla, WordPress, blogger, and many more.
In contrast, the Vlog is also supported by several platforms like Vimeo, Facebook, YouTube, and many more.
Lastly, The number of visitors that visit the Blog and vlogs is not very precise, but the number of websites and blogs is much larger than the number of vlogs.
Putting all these together should make you make an informed decision on whether to start vlogging or blogging.
